To be able to act and listen (to the prompting) and speak is quite a bit of multitasking! :-) We folks take the easy way out and memorize the lines and act without prompters. In fact, we end up memorizing the other lines as well (at least when one is on the stage), which helps in improvised prompting, lest someone stumble. A prompter complicates things for the actors, in my opinion.

We have gone several steps further nowadays... in the US, "acting" has often been reduced to miming and lip-syncing on stage with prerecorded audio (often by other voices than the actors on stage) -- theatre is emulating dance-dramas now, I should say! :D
Although, all this prerecording started with the excuse that the audience cannot "hear the actors" in the school auditoriums and warehouses we perform instead of proper theatrical venues.

Hi ... saw some film of India train travel maybe 20 years ago, and a lot of it was still steam. (In fact the traveller got boiling water to shave with from the accomodating engineer from the locomotive boiler). Is there still steam passenger rail in India? What parts?

This spring we'll be taking a wonderful right to the summit of Mount Washington, New Hampshire on its famous, ancient cog railway. Traditionally it was always coal (with a guarantee of hot cinders in your eye) and steam, but my last trip was a surprise of the future: the locomotive was a brand new John Deere engine that ran on recycled French Fries vegetable oil! (And it didn't smell like French Fries.)

Very well-written summary of one of the pioneering expatriate journalists who worked much to bring India closer to the Americans. Last Flames does capture this forgotten chapter of history well. I wonder how Basanta Roy's times were - were his writings accepted with open arms? Did he have to fight hard to overcome race discrimination? How did he manage to influence people and reach such a large audience? Charisma, help from friends?
As a parting thought, I wonder how many such lost souls are out there, who did so much for India but did not gain their recognition.

I know Sudipto, who has written the play. And I fondly remember a long telephonic conversation with him last July. Kudos to Sudipto and his team for having staged the play on Basanta Koomar Roy.
One observation: The author's name should be clearly mentioned somewhere as a credit line, so that when the page is shared, the author is not missed out.

Maybe there is a third option....believing in a higher power but not religion per se....or is that the same?
I love every religious event and all things cultural associated with that. And not just my religion. Almost every organized religion. However - not having a blind faith in 'documented' religion.
However in my own private way believing in a higher power.

Actually the old meaning of Durga Puja also changed in Bengal. Most of the puja committee represents their ability to spend money and power rather then their divinity to goddess Durga.

The children from outside of Bengal, who ware not part of Durga puja in Bengal, never feel the actual test of Durga puja. As long as they become elder, they will find their happiness what they will get easily near by their hand. They will be habituated by the local culture and festival rather then a foreign festival (Durga Puja).
